This week, I sat down with model and influencer @kenzlawren to talk all things fashion, beauty, and breaking industry stereotypes. As a former model myself, I wanted to discuss the differences—if there were any at all—between my time starting out in the ‘90s and her experience in the industry today.

Kenz shares the inspiration behind New Face, her newest project dedicated to supporting aspiring models and advocating for a more inclusive industry!

As it’s eating disorder awareness month, I want to speak about an important mental illness around ED. Body Dysmorphia Disorder (BDD) is more than just insecurity —it’s a mental health condition where someone becomes fixated on perceived flaws in their appearance and can severely interfere with their life.

This is something that many women, including myself, have suffered from, and if you or anyone you know is struggling with this, it’s important to know that you’re not alone.

It’s crucial to recognize your suffering, seek help, and remember that everyone’s worth goes beyond how we look. You are far more than worthy than you perceive yourself to be and you deserve to hear that from yourself, not just me. ❤️

BBP has connected me to women all around the world, and creating this community has been such a privilege. I started writing “Dear Body” letters to myself when I was battling many challenges with my body image and self worth. I was suffering from multiple miscarriages, recovering from distorted self-perception from my modeling career, and learning to heal my relationship with what I saw in the mirror.

These letters have shaped a considerable part of the Beyond Beauty Project, and I am honored to extend these letters, which have helped me, to so many beautiful women across the globe. Each of these beauties has contributed an immense amount to the BBP community and I couldn’t be more thankful of their support.

I hope to inspire all of you to continue the fight against harmful standards and write “Dear Body” letters to show gratitude for your body and how far you have come, even writing just one positive phrase for your body, you are taking a step in the right direction.

It’s time that we go beyond what is expected and break free from the pressures imposed by society. These pressures range from beauty standards, ageism, and perfectionism to racism, patriarchy and suppression.

To follow harmful narratives such as diet culture or toxic “eternal youth” messaging, only further prevents us from reaching peace within our minds, bodies, and spirits.

They (the Modeling Agency) told me to lose weight, so I walked away from modeling a few days later and created Beyond Beauty Project.

They told me I needed to lose weight to fit their standards, but I knew I was worth more than that.

So - I decided to define my value on my own terms.

Being told I wasn’t ‘small enough’ took me on a serious self discovery journey to reclaim my body and my worth. I was no longer going to let someone else’s idea of beauty determine who I am. I stopped chasing a version of success that was never mine to begin with and started embracing my own.

It was one of the toughest challenges to walk away from my career of 25 years. But it became one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve made because I got to redefine what my life looked like… little by little, I learned more about myself—my unique beauty, worth, value, purpose, and passion.

That is the beauty in breaking .. you get to rediscover, reclaim, redefine it however you want!

We can’t control the thoughts and words of others but what we can do is break the cycle for the next generation (if you decided to raise one) and the people around you.

The words you choose shape your mindset and your relationship with your body.

Studies show that self-talk influences how you feel and act, with positive self-talk linked to reduced stress and improved self-esteem (Kazantzis et al., 2018).

Shifting from ‘I have to work out’ to ‘I am able to move my body’ reframes exercise as gratitude instead of obligation, building a sense of self-compassion and self-care.

Neuroscience even shows that repetitive thoughts can strengthen specific brain pathways, meaning positive language can literally rewire your brain for self-love (Siegel, 2010).

While on your journey to healing your body image, I want you to remember: your words are a powerful tool for transformation.🌱❤️

✎A study by Baikie & Wilhelm (2005) found that expressive writing helps process emotions, leading to lower anxiety and depression levels.

Guys, I’m feeling it too! It feels like the whole world is shrinking, and practising body neutrality and self acceptance right now truly feels like a radical act. How mad is that?!

But I know that the idea that the smallest version of me is the best version of me is a diet culture myth, and I just don’t subscribe to it anymore.

Being healthy for me - physically, mentally and emotionally - doesn’t involve the act of shrinking myself, or changing my body size.

If you share this sentiment, know that you don’t need to lose weight either. We have to fight to block out this overwhelming noise that unfortunately is extremely pervasive right now. It’s hard though, I get it fully, and I’m just sending you all a lot of love”
