Creating And Improving Healthy Skin Habits

like to think of skincare the way we think of any other healthy habit: to see results, consistency

is key. Results are not instant and are only maintained with dedication. You wouldn’t master an

instrument after just one lesson; likewise, healthy skincare habits need to be repeated and

sustained to have long-term and lasting benefits.


According to research done at University College London, it takes 66 days, or about two

months, to form a new habit. Habits are powerful. They shape our lives by influencing our

health and happiness, and how we spend our time. Sometimes our habits and routines are so

on autopilot that we forget to consider that we have the autonomy to change and optimize

them.


As we head into the cooler months, our busy summer lifestyles tend to slow down a bit, leaving

a bit more room for our routines to take center stage once again. We want to encourage you to

think about what habits you’d like to improve and make more space for – especially those that

are related to your skin health and wellness routines.


While many of us automatically think of our favourite creams, moisturizers, and serums when

we think of our skincare routines, we want to encourage you to consider how you’re nourishing

your skin from within. From hydration to nutrition, to supplementation – creating an optimal

skincare routine requires an internal and external approach to achieve a healthy complexion.


Need some ideas for how to cement your healthy (internal and external) skincare habits? The

best way to ensure that your skincare routine is consistent and ongoing is to pair it with

another daily ritual or habit. This is called habit stacking. According to Everyday Health, habit

stacking is “creating and sticking with new routines by building on the ones you already have.”


Here are some examples of habit stacking in terms of your skincare routine – including

options that fulfill both an internal and external approach to skin health:

  • Doing laundry is a habit most of us have in common. Why not set the intention that the next time you’re waiting for your laundry to dry, you will take some time to relax with your favourite face mask on?

  • You already tote a water bottle everywhere and drink a ton of water – great! Why not try adding a scoop of Marine Collagen to your bottle to support skin, hair, and nail health?

  • In the morning, when you take time to brush and floss your teeth – put your favorite sunscreen nearby so you take the time to apply it after you finish taking care of your dental health.

  • Optimize your supplement routine! Many of us take medication or a supplement daily. It’s the perfect time to evaluate whether we should add something like omega-3 fatty acids to our routine as they help maintain the skin’s lipid barrier, keeping it hydrated and feeling healthy.

  • Ensure you’re getting enough fiber in your diet! Fiber is known for its role in promoting healthy digestion and a well-functioning gut is connected to a healthy complexion via the gut-skin axis. It’s a great opportunity to reflect on what’s working in our lives, and what isn’t and
